Case No. 1653Murder, assault causing harm · Co. Kildare · 28 Apr 2020

Man sentenced to life for murder in Newbridge, Co Kildare

Brian Ibe, a 23-year-old man (reports differ, giving 24), broke into the home of 65-year-old man Peter Kennedy in Moore Park, Newbridge, Co Kildare, on 28 April 2020 by smashing a window and assaulted him, causing fatal head injuries from which Kennedy died at Beaumont Hospital on 12 May 2020. Ibe was also charged with assault causing harm to Garda Brendan O'Donnell at Newbridge Garda Station on 29 April 2020, to which he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity alongside the murder charge. His first trial collapsed in July 2024 over a legal disagreement on the classification of defence witnesses, and a second trial at the Central Criminal Court commenced in March 2025. In April 2025, a jury unanimously rejected the insanity defence and convicted Ibe of murder and assault causing harm. On 19 May 2025, Ms Justice Greally sentenced Ibe to the mandatory life term for murder, backdated to 29 April 2020, and 12 months for the assault on the garda.
