Case No. 1199Unlawful killing (manslaughter) · Co. Limerick · 4 Nov 2023

Man sentenced for unlawful killing of neighbour with shovel in Limerick

Joseph Cahill, 46, a man, struck his neighbour Gerard 'Ger' Curtin, 43, a man, four times with a shovel outside his home on Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, Limerick, on 4 November 2023, after Curtin had repeatedly demanded money and smashed windows at the property. Cahill was originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to unlawful killing (manslaughter) on 30 May 2025, the DPP accepting the plea on the basis that he honestly believed he was protecting himself, his property and his children but the force used was excessive. At a sentencing hearing on 31 July 2025, Ms Justice Eileen Creedon adjourned sentencing to 24 November 2025, with the DPP saying the offence warrants a headline sentence of 10 to 15 years.
