Man sentenced for dangerous driving causing death in Limerick
Joe Drennan, a 21-year-old University of Limerick journalism student from Mountrath, Co Laois, was killed on 13 October 2023 while waiting at a bus stop on the Dublin Road in Castletroy when a car struck him. Kieran Fogarty, who was 19 at the time and on bail with a driving ban, was arrested in November 2023 and charged with dangerous driving causing death and other offences. He pleaded guilty to ten counts at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in October 2024 and was sentenced on 30 January 2025 to six and a half years, to run concurrently with an eight-year sentence for a separate firearms offence. An inquest in March 2025 recorded a verdict of unlawful killing, and the DPP has lodged an appeal against the hit-and-run sentence.
