Case No. 20984Assault · Co. Kildare · 4 Apr 2022

Man sent for trial over assault on councillor in Newbridge

Michael Kane, 30, a Newbridge man also known as Michael Turner, is alleged to have kicked Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender in the head at least twice just outside the Newbridge garda station on April 4, 2022, at around 3.15am. Pender suffered an intercranial bleed and a small nose fracture, and CCTV footage was gathered. At Naas District Court in March 2023, Kane's solicitor Tim Kennelly said his client did not accept the allegations, and Judge Desmond Zaidan refused jurisdiction citing the serious nature of the case. On May 18, 2023, after a book of evidence was served, Judge Zaidan sent the case forward for trial at Naas Circuit Criminal Court on June 20, and Kane was remanded on continuing bail.
