Man on appeal over eight-year sentence for indecent assault in Monaghan

The abuse began in 1971 when Noeleen was 14, in 1976 when PJ was around 11, and in 1977 when Fiona was nine. Harte was interviewed by gardaí in November 2021, pleaded guilty to 15 counts of indecent assault, and was sentenced to eight years at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin in October 2024. On 20 January 2026, his lawyers argued at the Court of Appeal that the sentence was disproportionate under the legislation in force at the time, and Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy reserved judgment.
