Man jailed for three years over drugs he agreed to pick up to pay debt
Jason Smith, a 31-year-old man from Ballycullen in Dublin, was stopped by gardaí on 1 June 2023 after they had put under surveillance a van parked for several weeks in Dundrum. Gardaí saw him remove an item from the van and place it in his car, where they found cannabis and cannabis jellies worth €2,304, and they found cocaine in a hidden compartment in the van, with a total seizure valued at €143,697. Smith said he did not know about the drugs and that his role was to remove items from the van and hand them over, and he said he had agreed to pick up the drugs because he had run up a drug debt while addicted to Xanax. On 15 January 2025 he was sentenced to three years at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the latest development in the case.
