Case No. 21098Driving without insurance · Co. Laois · 21 Apr 2023

Man jailed for three months for driving uninsured on M7 near Portlaoise

On 21 April 2023 Abdul Shakoor Awan, 44, of Portarlington, was stopped by gardaí at 5.30pm on the M7 at Cappakeel, Portlaoise, Co Laois, and asked for his insurance and licence. Gardaí said he had five previous road traffic convictions, three for no insurance, and the judge said he had effectively been disqualified since 2019 but still owned a car. At Portlaoise Court in May 2023 Awan admitted driving without insurance, and the judge imposed a three-month prison sentence and a €500 fine after his solicitor said he had taken a chance when prior transport arrangements fell through. The judge fixed recognisance pending appeal, and Awan appealed the sentence shortly after the case concluded, as reported on 16 May 2023.
