Case No. 5953Dangerous driving causing death · Co. Cork · 29 Dec 2022

Man jailed for six years over dangerous driving causing death in Cork

On 29 December 2022, Bohdan Bezverkhyi, a 33-year-old Ukrainian man living in Ballinhassig, Co Cork, allegedly drove through a stop sign at Dunkereen Cross, Innishannon, and struck the car of 65-year-old GAA broadcaster Paudie Palmer, who died at Cork University Hospital on 8 January 2023. Bezverkhyi was arrested the same day, initially charged with four hit-and-run offences, and later charged with dangerous driving causing death in March 2023. His trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in February 2024 ended in a mistrial after a juror visited the crash scene, and a retrial in April 2024 resulted in a unanimous guilty verdict. On 2 May 2024, Bezverkhyi was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison with the final year and a half suspended and disqualified from driving for ten years.
