Man jailed for nine years over drugs for Limerick crime gang
Ian Hopkins, a 33-year-old man, stored and sold drugs for an organised crime gang in Limerick and laundered the gang's drug money. Gardaí stopped him driving a Mercedes on 12 December 2020 and found €24,810 in cash and €3,352 worth of cannabis on him, and a follow-up search of an apartment he was using at Bloomfield, Annacotty found over €16,600 worth of cannabis. In December 2021 he was found bleeding heavily in an apartment in Limerick City after two masked men attempted to break in, and he later admitted a number of drug and money-laundering charges at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, where the judge said a mandatory 10-year minimum would be unjust. As reported on 9 May 2025, he was jailed for nine years and is being held under 23-hour protective lockdown in his prison cell.
