Man jailed after high-speed chase in Ballybofey
On 23 April 2023 at about 1.28am, gardaí saw James Mitchell, a 42-year-old man, get into a vehicle at Glenfin Street, Ballybofey, while a bench warrant was in existence for him. When gardaí approached, Mitchell drove off at speed, pulled into oncoming traffic on Ballybofey Main Street and exceeded 110km/h on Navenny Street, forcing people to take evasive action, and a car's windscreen was damaged and its tyres slashed. Mitchell was charged with criminal damage to a car belonging to a woman he had previously been in a relationship with, and when interviewed he admitted the incident and apologised. On 6 September 2023 at Letterkenny District Court, Judge Cunningham struck out two other dangerous driving charges and sentenced Mitchell to four months for one dangerous driving charge and two months for criminal damage, with the sentences running consecutively to each other and concurrently with his current sentence.
