Man convicted of assaulting and raping former partner appeals conviction
A 53-year-old man was convicted of assaulting and raping his former partner, a woman, with offences committed in Dublin between 15 August and 5 September 2016. He pleaded guilty to more than 30 counts of assault causing harm, and after a trial in November 2021 a jury convicted him of 15 further counts. In December 2022 Mr Justice Michael McGrath at the Central Criminal Court sentenced him to 12 years with six months suspended. On 5 May 2026 the appeal opened at the Four Courts, where the defence argued the jury should have been discharged over prosecution comments, and the three-judge court reserved judgment to be delivered the following Monday.
