Man appeals rape conviction after false imprisonment ordeal in the midlands

On 7 August 2018 a 48-year-old man raped his former partner at his home in the midlands, Co Offaly, during an ordeal lasting around 10 hours. He had earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting her causing harm, and in 2022 a jury convicted him of false imprisonment. In February a jury at the Central Criminal Court in Tullamore unanimously found him guilty of rape, and he was sentenced to nine years for the rape and four and a half years, with the final year suspended, for the assault and false imprisonment. He has appealed the rape conviction, and the Court of Appeal has reserved judgment until after the summer break ending in October.
