Case No. 1750Taxi licence refusal (administrative challenge) · Co. Dublin

Man acquitted of sexual assault wins High Court challenge to taxi licence refusal

A 55-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect his victim's identity, was convicted in May 2023 of raping and sexually assaulting a girl aged seven or eight between September 2012 and September 2013 in Dublin, and was sentenced to 10 years and six months for rape and seven years and six months for 12 counts of sexual assault. In May 2025, the Court of Appeal reserved judgment on his appeal, in which defence counsel argued the trial judge should have given a corroboration warning. A separate man, acquitted of sexually assaulting his 19-year-old daughter after a retrial, won a High Court challenge to a Gardaí refusal of his taxi licence. Ms Justice Siobhán Phelan quashed the refusal and sent it back for further consideration, ruling the man was entitled to know the material available to the licensing authority as a matter of constitutional fair procedures.
