Longford man jailed for stealing €20 weekly from vulnerable victim over eight to ten years
Hughie Nevin, a 43-year-old man from Longford, was sentenced on 28 February 2024 to four years in prison for demanding money with menace after stealing €20 a week from an older vulnerable man for between eight and ten years. Nevin would wait at the Kiosk on Dublin Street, Longford, every Thursday when the victim collected his €220 monthly disability allowance, and on 9 March 2023 Gardaí arrested him during a joint operation with An Post that tracked the serial numbers of notes given to the victim. He was charged with theft of €20 and demanding money with menace, and the theft charge was taken into consideration in sentencing. The four-year sentence, with the final 18 months suspended for three years, will be activated upon the lawful expiration of a 27-month prison sentence Nevin is currently serving for a section 3 assault handed down in May 2023.
