Case No. 1193Murder · Co. Dublin · 24 Feb 2022

Law professor acquitted of murder at Tallaght farm

Diarmuid Phelan, a 56-year-old senior counsel and law professor at Trinity College Dublin, was unanimously acquitted of the murder of Keith Conlon, a 36-year-old man and father of four, by a Central Criminal Court jury on 3 January 2025. Conlon was shot in the back of the head by a third shot from Phelan's Smith & Wesson revolver on 22 February 2022 at Hazelgrove Farm, Kiltalown Lane, Tallaght, after three men had trespassed on the farm hunting with dogs. Phelan said he first shot a lurcher belonging to the trespassers with a Winchester rifle, after which heated exchanges followed. Conlon died at Tallaght University Hospital two days later from a single gunshot wound to the head. Phelan was arrested at the scene, charged with murder, and pleaded not guilty; the ten-week trial before Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford concluded with the jury accepting the defence case of self-defence.
