Case No. 9346Murder · Co. Dublin · 22 Dec 2016

Kinahan gang 'lieutenant' Sean McGovern jailed for 24 years

On 22 December 2016, a gunman shot Noel Kirwan, a 62-year-old man, six times while he was in his car in County Dublin. Sources say Kirwan was targeted solely because of his personal links to the Hutch family. Sean McGovern, a 40-year-old man described as a Kinahan crime gang 'lieutenant', pleaded guilty to two charges of directing the activities of a criminal organisation and admitted directing surveillance of James Gately in preparation for an indictable offence. He was the first person extradited from the United Arab Emirates to face trial in Ireland, and the court found that he planned, oversaw and directed the murder of Kirwan. On 8 June 2026 he was sentenced to 24 years in prison, with 15 years for the Kirwan murder and 12 years for the Gately surveillance.
