Case No. 14022Sexual assault · Co. Kilkenny

Kilkenny man's jail term more than doubled on appeal over abuse of daughters

A 63-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, repeatedly sexually abused and coercively controlled his two daughters over a period described as ten years, beginning in September 1992 for the older girl and in 1997, when the younger was six, for her. He was indicted on 74 counts of sexual assault against the girls and in November 2022 pleaded guilty at Kilkenny Circuit Court to 20 sample counts, and received a four and a half year sentence. The Director of Public Prosecutions applied for a review of that sentence as too lenient. The Court of Appeal quashed the original term and re-sentenced him to a global term of 12 years, with the sentences running consecutively, as reported on 8 April 2025.
