Jury discharged in Dublin trial of man accused of father's murder
Michael Whelan, a man aged 64, was found dead on the kitchen floor of a flat in Herberton Park, Rialto, Dublin 8, on 27 February 2024 after a neighbour requested a welfare check. A pathologist said he died from blunt force trauma to the head and two stab wounds to the heart and lungs, with 41 further stab wounds inflicted after death, on or around 19 or 20 February 2024. His son Seth Whelan, a man aged 36, was arrested on 28 February 2024 and charged with murder and criminal damage to a neighbour's Ring doorbell. He pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court in October 2026, and the trial began before Ms Justice Caroline Biggs. The jury of six men and six women was discharged on 28 October 2026, two weeks into the trial, and the judge said it would restart very soon with a different panel.
