Case No. 0044Triple murder · Co. Louth · 28 Sep 2025

Jury asked to consider insanity verdict in Co Louth triple murder

Robert O'Connor, 32, of Drumgowna, Co Louth, is on trial at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of his mother Louise O'Connor, 56, his father Mark O'Connor, 54, and his younger brother Evan O'Connor, 27, who were found dead at their home between 28 and 29 September 2025 with a combined 139 stab wounds. He was arrested on foot near the Louth-Monaghan boundary on 29 September and charged with three counts of murder on 30 September. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, or guilty of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, at his arraignment on 7 October 2026. The trial, before Mr Justice Mícheál P O'Higgins and a jury of six men and six women, heard evidence from two psychiatrists who agree he was suffering a relapse of schizophrenia but differ on whether he qualifies for the insanity verdict. Closing speeches were delivered on 29 October, with the defence asking the jury to consider the special verdict and the prosecution arguing for manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
