Judge directs acquittal of man over Carrigans crash
On 17 August 2016 a motorcycle and a car collided head-on at Dunmore, Carrigans, Co Donegal. The motorcyclist, David Lecky, a 55-year-old man from Ballyshannon, later had his left leg amputated below the knee in early 2017. The driver, Levi Morrison, a 29-year-old mechanic from Derry, was charged with dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm, pleaded not guilty to that charge and pleaded guilty to driving without insurance. At his trial at Letterkenny Circuit Court, the judge found the evidence too tenuous to put to the jury and directed his acquittal on the dangerous driving charge, and he was fined €500 for having no insurance without being disqualified, as reported on 21 October 2023. A civil aspect of the case is being pursued in a separate court.
