High Court dismisses murder prisoner's sentence challenge in Clare

Raymond Donovan, 44, strangled his former girlfriend Ann Walsh, 23, to death on the grounds of St Senan's church in Kilrush, Co Clare, on 24 August 2005. A jury at the Central Criminal Court in Ennis unanimously convicted Donovan of murder, and Mr Justice Paul Carney sentenced him to mandatory life imprisonment in June 2006. Donovan has served 17 years in prison as of December 2022, with several day releases and a period at Shelton Abbey open prison before being returned to Castlerea Prison. In January 2026, the High Court dismissed Donovan's habeas corpus challenge claiming the Court of Criminal Appeal had substituted his life sentence for a 20-year term in 2009.
