Grandson charged after man (70s) dies in hospital following Donegal incident

On Sunday 17 December 2023, a man in his 70s, Derek Burns, was assaulted at his home in Derrybeg, Gaoth Dobhair, Co Donegal, and was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with serious injuries. A man in his 30s, Derek Mulligan, aged 36, was arrested and charged, and appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on 19 December 2023, when the defence said there would be no bail application. Mr Burns was pronounced dead in hospital on the evening of 19 December.
