Case No. 1976Directing organised crime · Co. Dublin

DPP considering directing organised crime charges in Dublin

Gerry Hutch, a man aged 59 or 61, is under investigation for directing a crime gang in Dublin, with a four-year Garda file submitted to the DPP in 2024 recommending charges. Former superintendent John Murphy, a man aged 62 or 64, was questioned by the NBCI in January 2023 over suspected links to Hutch while serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence for holding nearly €260,000 worth of cannabis at his Clontarf home. Hutch was acquitted of the 2016 murder of David Byrne at Dublin's Regency Hotel in April 2023 and was separately arrested in Lanzarote, Spain, in October 2024 over a money-laundering investigation. As of March 2025, the DPP has not yet decided whether to bring charges against Hutch, Murphy, and two suspended serving gardaí.
