Gardaí still preparing file on Ian Bailey over Sophie Toscan Du Plantier murder despite his death

Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 39-year-old French mother of one from Paris (reports differ on whether she was 38), was murdered with rocks at her holiday home at Toormore near Schull, Co Cork, on December 23rd, 1996. Ian Bailey, a 66-year-old English man, was arrested twice for questioning, but the DPP found insufficient evidence and he was never charged. In 2019 a French court convicted him in absentia of voluntary homicide and sentenced him to 25 years, and the High Court refused his extradition to France on a European Arrest Warrant. Bailey died on Sunday 21 January 2024 of a suspected heart attack, and gardaí say the cold case review continues and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
