Gardaí renew appeal in Emer O'Loughlin murder investigation in Clare

On 8 April 2005, a mobile home at Ballybornagh, Tubber, Co Clare was destroyed by fire and the badly burned remains of 23-year-old art student Emer O'Loughlin were found inside. In May 2010, gardaí exhumed her remains and forensic tests at University Hospital Galway indicated a violent death, upgrading the investigation to murder. John Griffin, 57, formerly of Mervue, Galway City, who owned the mobile home, went missing ten days after the fire and was last confirmed seen on Inis Mór in the Aran Islands, where his clothing was later found on a cliff top in what gardaí believe was a staged suicide. An inquest jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing in November 2025, and no one has been charged. On 8 April 2026, gardaí renewed their appeal for information on the 21st anniversary, seeking to trace Griffin, whom they believe is still alive.
