Garda sued in High Court over alleged assault and racial abuse of taxi driver
On 15 August 2021 in Clonee, Dublin, a garda, Dylan O'Loughlin, allegedly assaulted and racially abused taxi driver Mohammad Ali, a man from Kuwait, during a dispute over a fare. Gardaí arrested O'Loughlin after Mr Ali called Blanchardstown Garda station, and in the District Court O'Loughlin pleaded guilty to public drunkenness, threatening and abusive behaviour, assault and interfering with the mechanism of a car. The judge struck out the criminal matter with no conviction on condition he paid €5,000 to charity, following a Garda Ombudsman Commission investigation. In October 2023 Mr Ali brought a civil action in the High Court against O'Loughlin and An Garda Síochána, the latest development in the case.
