Garda hospitalised after assault by motorist at Ballyjamesduff checkpoint

On Saturday 12 April 2025, a man driving a vehicle approached a Garda checkpoint at Crosskeyes, Ballyjamesduff, Cavan at speed and crossed onto the wrong side of the road in an attempt to run down one of the two Gardaí conducting the checkpoint. The vehicle was later intercepted on the Ballinagh Road in Cavan Town, where the driver resisted arrest and assaulted two Garda members, one of whom was taken to Cavan General Hospital by ambulance and released with non-serious injuries. The driver, who had no insurance, tax or NCT and failed to provide a roadside breath test, has been charged with assaulting Gardaí and resisting arrest and is before the courts.
