Garda acquitted of raping wife but convicted of child cruelty against two daughters

A 48-year-old Irish serving garda, who has a statutory right to anonymity, was tried at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on charges of raping his Algerian wife in 2009 and 2021 and of child cruelty and assault causing harm against his two step-daughters. The allegations came to light through a Tusla referral in 2024 after the eldest daughter began Jigsaw therapy, and the accused was charged in January 2026. He pleaded not guilty to all six charges. On 10 July 2026, a jury acquitted him of the two rape counts but convicted him of all four counts relating to the two daughters. He was remanded on continuing bail with sentencing set for 27 July 2026.
