Case No. 7042Assault; public order offence · Co. Galway

Farmer sentenced to community service for cow dung assault in Gort

On 4 January 2023 (one report gives 3 January), Joseph Baldwin, a man from Ballyaneen, Gort, County Galway, aged 39 in some reports and 38 in others, threw a sealed bag of cow dung towards Anne Rabbitte, a woman who was then Galway East TD and Minister of State, and another bag towards Ciaran Cannon, a man and Fine Gael TD, at a public meeting about a proposed biogas plant at O'Sullivan's Royal Hotel in Gort. Gardaí launched an investigation and Baldwin admitted responsibility in January 2023. He was charged with assault under Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and a public order offence in November 2023 and contested both charges. Judge Alec Gabbett convicted him of both offences at Ennis District Court on 2 October 2024, and on 18 December 2024 sentenced him to 60 hours of community service in lieu of a three-month prison term.
