Four men charged over Carrigaholt Post Office robbery, Clare
On 21 January 2026, four men were allegedly involved in a robbery at Carrigaholt Post Office in west Clare, in which postmistress Maura McKiernan was allegedly assaulted with iron bars and cash, coins and a cheque worth €8,944.63 were allegedly taken. Gardaí said the four men were arrested by the Garda Armed Response Unit at 3.45pm that day after a high-speed car chase across west Clare, and €6,500 was later recovered from the road. The accused are Darren Cassidy (38), Michael McMahon (38), Martin Downes (36) and Darragh Pender (30), and all four have been on remand in custody since January. In a court report from early May 2026, the DPP directed that three of them go forward to the circuit court on a single robbery charge each, and they were remanded to Ennis court on 20 May. At Ennis District Court on 26 May, the defence for Cassidy and McMahon said both were ready to plead guilty and rejected a DPP demand to accept the disclosure in writing, Downes remained in a holding pattern, and Pender was due before court the following week.
