Former social worker's appeal against conviction for defiling boy in State care dismissed
A 44-year-old woman, a social worker whom the court cannot name to protect the victim's identity, was convicted of defiling a boy who was 16 at the time and in her care at a midlands school. The offence was alleged to have happened at her home on unknown dates between April 1 and May 15, 2016. After pleading not guilty, she was convicted by a jury after an 11-day trial, and in November 2022 Judge Cormac Quinn at Clonmel Circuit Criminal Court jailed her for four years with the final two suspended. She appealed, arguing that Facebook messages should not have been admitted because the request was made under the wrong section of a 2008 mutual legal assistance treaty between Ireland and the United States, but the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and she remains behind bars, as reported on January 18, 2024.
