Former Newbridge soldier appeals rape conviction
Niall Kennedy (32), a former soldier from Standhouse Lawns, Newbridge, County Kildare, was convicted by a jury in December 2021 of 12 counts of rape on eleven occasions in August 2017 against a woman he had been dating. He was also convicted of harassment between February and August 2017 and of threats to kill or cause serious harm in June 2017 and twice in August 2017. Reports differ on the sentence: one says he was jailed for 10 years, while another says he was sentenced to 12 years with the final two suspended. He has appealed his conviction, and at the Court of Appeal on Monday his lawyers argued for a corroboration warning, with Mr Justice Birmingham reserving judgment.
