Case No. 6106Murder (suspected) · Co. Louth · 13 Feb 1997

Former detective recounts 1997 disappearance of Ciara Breen in Dundalk

Ciara Breen, a 17-year-old woman, left her home on Batchelor's Walk in Dundalk, Co Louth, through a sitting room window on the night of 13 February 1997 and was never seen again. The investigation was taken over in 2014 and upgraded from a missing persons case to murder. Liam Mullen, a man, was arrested on suspicion of murder in 1999 and again later, and was released without charge after the second arrest; a 2015 search of Balmer's Bog found nothing. Mullen died in Garda custody in 2017 after being arrested on suspicion of drink driving. In April 2024, ahead of a new documentary, retired Detective Inspector Pat Marry said he believes Ciara was killed and buried in bogland near her home.
