Fat Freddie Thompson loses Court of Appeal bid to quash murder conviction
On 1 July 2016, David 'Daithí' Douglas, a 55-year-old man, was shot six times at a counter in his partner's shop on Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 8. 'Fat' Freddie Thompson, a 43-year-old man, pleaded not guilty and was jailed for life by the Special Criminal Court in August 2018 after a 12-day trial. In April 2023 his lawyers argued that his conviction should be quashed over CCTV image quality, privacy breaches and the lack of records of his identification. On 30 January 2024 the Court of Appeal found no error in admitting the footage and dismissed the appeal in its entirety, so his conviction and life sentence stand.
