Dublin man jailed for seven years over false imprisonment and robbery of Offaly pensioner
On 26 February 2024, four men tied up, assaulted and robbed James (Jimmy) Donoghue, a 67-year-old pensioner, at his home in Walsh Island, Co Offaly, taking €1,000, a bank card and a bank book. Gardaí identified Patrick McDonagh, 24, of Ballymun, Dublin, as the driver of a Ford Focus seen near the scene, and clothing of his with blood matching the victim was found. McDonagh was taken into custody in January, and he pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning the victim. On 3 June 2025 Judge Keenan Johnson at Tullamore Circuit Criminal Court reduced a headline sentence of ten years to seven, with no part suspended and the sentence backdated to January.
