Crotty due for release from Limerick prison after assault conviction
In May 2022, Natasha O'Brien, a 24-year-old Irish woman, was beaten unconscious by Cathal Crotty, a 20-year-old Irish man and serving soldier, on O'Connell Street in Limerick city after she asked him to stop shouting homophobic abuse. Crotty was arrested in June 2022, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, and in June 2024 received a fully suspended three-year sentence at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and in January 2025 the Court of Appeal overturned it, jailing Crotty for two years. Crotty, who was discharged from the Defence Forces in July 2024, is due to be released from Limerick Prison in days.
