Court of Appeal upholds rape conviction of former Defence Force member
On 26 July 2021, a woman in her 20s, a serving soldier in the Irish Defence Forces, was allegedly raped at a hotel in Dublin by Kielan Mooney, a 30-year-old man of Bloomfield Park, Derry, who was a Defence Force member at the time. In December 2024, after a trial at the Central Criminal Court, Mooney was convicted of anal rape, oral rape and rape, and the jury failed to reach a verdict on three other charges. In January 2025, Mr Justice Tony Hunt jailed him for eight and a half years. On 1 July 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed Mooney's appeal against his conviction, with Ms Justice Tara Burns presiding.
