Court of Appeal upholds Jonathan Dowdall's sentence for facilitating Regency Hotel murder
David Byrne, a man aged 34 whom the Irish Times describes as a Kinahan cartel member, was murdered at the Regency Hotel on Swords Road, north Dublin, in February 2016. Jonathan Dowdall, a man aged 44 and a former Sinn Féin councillor, was charged with Byrne's murder in April 2021, but the charge was dropped after he admitted facilitating the Hutch gang by making a hotel room available. He pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court on 28 September 2022 and was sentenced to four years' imprisonment on 17 October 2022. On 14 July 2023 the Court of Appeal dismissed his bid to have the sentence reduced and found it very lenient.
