Case No. 14867Intimidation of a witness and criminal damage · Co. Louth · 27 Mar 2022

Court of Appeal finds Omeath man's suspended sentence for witness intimidation too lenient

On 27 March 2022 at Drummullagh, Omeath, County Louth, Conor McLoughlin (44) struck a car driven by Grainne McGuigan, a witness in a case against him, at 60 to 70 miles per hour and struck it three or four more times before driving towards his mother's house. Gardaí and the Armed Support Unit found him hiding in her attic, and he pleaded guilty to intimidating a witness and to criminal damage. In May 2024 Judge Dara Hayes at Dundalk Circuit Court fully suspended his sentences. On 21 January 2025 the Court of Appeal ruled that sentence too lenient, quashed it and imposed a sentence with three years to be served, and he was directed to present himself at Dundalk Garda Station on February 3.
