Court of Appeal doubles jail time for Jason Doyle over assault on partner

On 10 January 2021 Jason Doyle, a 28-year-old man, repeatedly punched and kicked his pregnant partner, Karen Maguire, at their home in Sligo while intoxicated. He was charged with four counts of assaulting her causing harm and pleaded guilty to one count on a full-facts basis at Sligo Circuit Criminal Court in January. At the lower court he received a two-year sentence with the final 15 months suspended, although the Irish Times reported the original jail term as nine months. After the State appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, the Court of Appeal on 4 July 2023 doubled his jail time to 18 months to serve.
