Carlow man jailed for life for raping and assaulting his wife

A 67-year-old Carlow man was arrested in December 2018 over allegations that he raped and assaulted his wife at the family home between 1991 and 2015, and he denied the rape allegations at arrest. He had been due to stand trial on 52 counts before pleading guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 12 sample counts, nine of rape, two of sexual assault and one of assault causing harm, and the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted the pleas on a full facts basis with the remaining charges to be taken into consideration. On 16 July 2024 Ms Justice Melanie Greally jailed him for life, setting a headline sentence of life for the rape offences.
