Bus driver's sentence for sexually abusing special needs boy increased on appeal
Between 1985 and 1988 in the southeast of the country, a school bus driver, now a 62-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons, inveigled his way into a boy's family as a friend, groomed the boy with special needs and sexually abused him. An investigation began in 2013 after the victim complained, and in June 2014 the man admitted possessing child pornography. He pleaded guilty to sample counts of indecent assault on 17 November 2021 and was sentenced in June 2022, but on 13 July 2023 the Court of Appeal found an error of principle, quashed the sentences and increased the total to six years and six months.
