Appeal court refuses to backdate life sentence for Tullamore murder
Ashling Murphy, a 23-year-old primary school teacher and traditional musician from Tullamore, was stabbed 11 times in the neck and slashed once with a blade while jogging along the Grand Canal at Cappincur, Tullamore, Co Offaly, on 12 January 2022. Jozef Puska, a 32-year-old Slovak man from Mucklagh, Co Offaly, was arrested on 18 January 2022 and charged with her murder. He pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court in October 2023, claiming a masked man had attacked both of them, but a jury found him guilty of murder on 9 November 2023. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 17 November 2023, and on 16 July 2026 the Court of Appeal refused his bid to have the sentence backdated to his arrest date, ending all legal proceedings.
