Each case starts with a news report. The line beside it follows the case through arrest, charge, court and sentence. A dashed step means no outlet reported it, though a later step shows it happened.

Callan Ward, a 32-year-old man from Tullamore, Co Offaly, was found guilty in June 2025 of false imprisonment, production of a baseball bat, and demanding money with menaces after luring John Murphy onto his motorbike at Kilcruttin Halting Site on 19 February 2022, where Murphy fell off and Ward demanded €500 while threatening him with a rusty bar and a steel baseball bat. Ward was sentenced to six years in prison. In October 2026, Ward's barristers told the Court of Appeal that Murphy and his wife Martina McCarthy-Murphy, who were declared hostile witnesses, had made unreliable statements while intoxicated, and Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy reserved his judgment on the appeal.

Barry Murphy appeals rape and coercive control conviction over cross-examination

Rape, coercive control, sexual assault, assault causing harm, false imprisonment · Offaly

Victim: Irish woman (judged from name)Suspect: Barry Murphy, Irish man, 41 (judged from name)Barry Murphy

Barry Murphy, a 41-year-old man from Co Offaly, was convicted by a jury in 2024 of three counts of raping his partner Lisa O'Meara, coercive control over an 18-month period, one count of sexual assault, three counts of assault causing harm, and one count of false imprisonment, with offences occurring in Co Offaly and abroad between 2018 and 2020. He was sentenced to 14 and a half years in prison by Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo. Murphy appealed to the Court of Appeal on 16 October 2026, arguing that the admission of video recordings of the complainant's gardaí interviews under section 16 of the Criminal Justice Act rendered his cross-examination ineffective and illusory because she told the trial she could not remember the events. The Court of Appeal, presided over by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy, reserved its judgment to a later date.
