Couple challenge wrongful demolition of Meath home in High Court

Planning enforcement, breach of European human rights law · Meath

Victim: Rose Murray, Irish woman (judged from name)Rose MurrayVictim: Chris Murray, Irish man (judged from name)Chris Murray

Rose and Chris Murray, a couple, built a 588 sq m property at Faughan Hill, Bohermeen, Navan, Meath, without planning permission after their application for a dormer bungalow was refused in June 2006. Meath County Council initiated enforcement action in 2007, and after proceedings spanning over two decades across the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, the High Court gave the council permission to demolish the house, which was knocked in March 2026. In October 2026, the Murrays applied before Judge David Nolan in the High Court, alleging the council breached European human rights law by demolishing the home while an ECHR application was pending, and also challenged a finding that they were in contempt of 2020 court undertakings to vacate. The judge reserved his judgment.
